In recent years, our POA Board has lead the community through very complex and impactful issues and opportunities. This includes the land purchase, transition of Big Canoe utilities, internet upgrades, and more. On the horizon, we have another potential, significant land transaction.
Whether or not you agree with the outcomes of these is not the point of this article. Rather, it is to highlight the complexity of the issues Board Members face and must lead us through.
We took some time to review Smoke Signals archives to understand if this is typical for Big Canoe’s Board. While most articles / candidates referenced long-range planning and fiscal management, the more specific challenges were significantly different than that which our current board faces. Below is just a snapshot of the issues referenced by candidates (2013 and earlier):
Swimming in Lake Petit
Wildlife Feeding
Aging Community
Refreshing Older Neighborhoods
POA Website
Landscaping and maintenance of common areas
Environmental Issues – maintaining Big Canoe’s natural beauty, water conservation, use of pesticides, etc.
Our intention is not to minimize these challenges but rather to highlight how complex the management and leadership of Big Canoe has become in recent years.
We would suggest that as the issues and opportunities have evolved so too should our election process.
What does that look like? We’ll save our ideas on that -
Until next time….
